Shepparton COGS Respite – Youth Adventures

Youth Adventures is the delivery of a group program for young people who are within the autism spectrum, run 4 hours per week.  This program will deliver group respite in the form of life skill activities in a friendly supported environment by a trained staff member.  The weekly group program allows for a large component of input and self directed learning in relation to the activities.  The staff ratio is 1:4 and at the most 1:5.  At this point there is no intention of having more than one staff member employed.  In the event of more participants it is anticipated another group may need to be initiated.

The program enables the participants to enjoy a range of activities.  It gives them the opportunity to attend events, for example the circus, that they wouldn't otherwise be able to.  They are able to make friends with one another and socialise with other young people of their nature.  The benefit of socialisation at the program, includes improvement in areas such as skill development, co-ordination and also contributes to a reduction in levels of stress.  It helps individuals to learn how to behave in public as well as towards each other.  Evidently, it has been a contributor to social education and personal development.  The program provides structure in the participants' lives and is a good way for them to develop routine.
